Sedation Dentistry

While dental phobia is a very real problem for many adults, it is something that need not continue throughout your life. This means that people with dental anxiety or a fear of the dentist likely neglect their teeth, which only leads to the need for more extensive and expensive care. We offer a safe and effective way for patients to relax during their appointment, all without being put to sleep. The gentle and sensitive approach to your dental care, as provided by our sedation dentist in Royal Oak, offers an elegant solution to this all too common problem.

Dr. Hartrick, with more than 28 years of experience in the practice of sedation dentistry, is well-equipped to deal with any of your dental anxieties.

The testaments of countless numbers of long-standing patients can account for Dr. Hartrick’s sedation dentistry ability to make your dental experiences as pleasant as possible. Along with her sympathetic approach to your care, Dr. Hartrick offers ways to help you feel relaxed and calm, along with some extra amenities, so your visits with us can be anxiety-free. For either option that you choose, you will remain completely awake throughout your procedure, able to breathe on your own and communicate with your dental care team. You will not be “put under” or asleep during your appointment. Below, you can explore the options we offer to decide how best to experience a calm visit to the dentist.

Oral Conscious Sedation – A pill (known as a mild sedative) that we give you to take when you arrive for your appointment. Oral conscious sedation will make you feel relaxed, but you might also be a little woozy. For this reason, you will want to get a ride to and from your appointment. However, you remain awake and aware of your surroundings, as well as maintain control over your body. We recommend that you plan on taking the day off from work or school because you may not be able to drive or focus afterward.

Nitrous Oxide – For patients requiring additional help, we have nitrous oxide to soothe you through your procedure with the assistance and gentle technique of one of Detroit’s most experienced dentists, Dr. Nancy Hartrick. Otherwise known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a time-tested relaxation technique that can leave you very relaxed in a short period of time. Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen that you breathe through a mask that is placed over your nose. Your sedation dentist keeps the nitrous oxide going throughout your procedure and turns it off when she is done. While breathing nitrous oxide, you remain awake and aware of your surroundings, and able to control your body. It works quickly and dissipates quickly, so you will not need to get a ride to and from your appointment.

Amenities to Help You Relax

Virtual reality glasses are a fantastic piece of equipment that allows you to watch a movie or listen to music during your treatment, making your experience an enjoyable one. Blankets to cover you while you are getting your treatments can give you that added comfort that may not only help you relax but look forward to your next appointment!

We understand you may be reluctant to visit the dentist. That is why our sedation dentist and her caring team are ready to do all we can to help you feel comfortable, relaxed, and safe with us.
